Who is eligible for services from the Council on Aging (COA)?

The COA provides services to all St. Johns County residents age 60 and older.

What type of services does the Council on Aging provide?

The COA provides congregate meals and activities in the senior center; Meals on Wheels for homebound clients; social services including counseling, homemaking services, information and referral, personal care, case management, and telephone reassurance; and transportation.

How do I become a member of the Council on Aging?

Those eligible for services through the COA can sign up by coming to the senior center between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon and completing a few simple forms. Individuals who are homebound can call our business offices at (904) 209-3700.

Can I visit the center to see if I like it?

Yes. Guests are always welcome to visit our center. If you would like to stay for lunch, please call our reservation desk at (904) 209-3700 by noon the day before your visit so we can include you in our meal count.

What type of activities do you offer at the Senior Center?

Our Coastal Community Center offers a wide variety of exercises and activities for the adult community. Programs range from chair exercises and strength training for the less active to line dancing, yoga and tai chi for those looking for more of a challenge. We also offer on-going classes such as computer and digital camera as well as instruction in various word processing programs like Microsoft Word & Microsoft Excel. Special activities are planned on a regular basis.

Where is the Senior Center located?

We currently have three locations: The Coastal Community Center is located at 180 Marine Street in downtown St. Augustine (209-3700) open Monday through Friday; Trout Creek Senior Center is located at 6795 Collier Road, Orangedale (522-1611) open Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and the Palm Valley/Ponte Vedra Center is located in the Palm Valley Community Center, 148 Canal Blvd., Palm Valley (280-3233) open Tuesday and Thursday.

Who is eligible for Meals on Wheels?

Individuals who are homebound and need Meals on Wheels should call the COA business offices at (904) 209-3700 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Social Services will do a telephone screening and assessment -- an evaluation of the individual's situation and eligibility.

Who is eligible to use COA transportation services?

Those who cannot provide or purchase their own transportation... for example,the elderly, persons with disabilities, Medicaid clients who meet the eligibility requirements of that program, persons who may be temporarily disabled, and the general public. Transportation services include, but are not limited to transportation to and from medical appointments, etc., via our para-transit "blue-and-white" COA buses,and general transportation in and around the city by our fixed route / public transportation system, the Sunshine Bus Company.

What are the rates for transportation services?

That depends upon your sponsorship and funding source. When you make your reservation for the paratransit services,you will be informed of the cost of your trip. The driver will collect the fare from you when you board the vehicle. Please have exact change.

The Medicaid co-payment does not apply to children under the age of 21, pregnant women when transportation is pregnancy related, nursing home residents, and recipients of Medicaid HMOs.

The fare for the fixed-route Sunshine Bus Service is $1.00 each way with discounts available for those under 6 or over 60. You may also purchase a monthly bus pass for a fixed rate that offers unlimited service during the month for which your pass applies.
