What is OneStorm?
In one sentence: OneStorm is a free hurricane preparedness resource for families, financially supported by related consulting services that are provided to businesses and local governments.
OneStorm was created in 2005 in reaction to one of the worst hurricane seasons in history. When Chris Bennett moved from Philadelphia to St. Petersburg, Florida that year, boy was he in for a surprise. Turning to the Internet (as he always does) for resources on how to prepare for back-to-back hurricanes, he was shocked to find such little information out there.
Over a casual lunch conversation with co-founder Peter Loui, they agreed that someone should really put everything in one place to help families get prepared. As Chris stated, “We decided to become that someone”. Three years later, they are preparing thousands of families across the country.
OneStorm has gained the support and endorsement of former National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield and CBS News Hurricane Expert Bryan Norcross, who you may remember, was the broadcaster who talked South Florida through Hurricane Andrew in 1992. These guys live and breathe preparedness - so much that Bryan later wrote a book on hurricanes. They were more than happy to lend their support to OneStorm's mission.
Last but certainly not least, OneStorm teamed up with Publix Supermarkets in 2006 to expand the culture of preparedness. Publix's unmatched commitment to supporting local communities is a perfect fit with OneStorm’s goals.
That's their story so far, and we can't wait to see how it continues. If you'd like to be a part of the next chapter, Chris would love to hear from you. chris@onestorm.org
